John Godber OBE currently ranks as the UK's 3rd most performed playwright of all time and has an illustrious career spanning 4 decades. John has an Olivier Award, 4 BAFTAs and 7 Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards. He has written in excess of 70 plays for the theatre, which are performed all over the world and has written for many TV shows including in his early career, Crown Court, Grange Hill & Brookside and his BBC children’s film The Odd Squad gained him 2 BAFTA awards.

His plays are studied as part of the national curriculum and his last feature film, an adaptation of the stage play “Up n Under” was a box office hit.

John spent over 25 years building one of the most successful regional theatres in the country, Hull Truck and is regarded as one of the country’s leading cultural icons.

In this candid documentary we follow his work in the theatre, his writing processes, his TV and Film involvement, his involvement with the Hull City of Culture and see him awarded his OBE. Plus we meet the man behind the scenes, the true northern gentle giant of British theatre.
